Are you afraid to die? Apparently it’s a fear that many, many of my fellow Americans think about or rather avoid thinking about all the time.
I don’t understand the sentiment. I’m personally looking forward to dying. From what I can tell the purpose of life on Earth is suffering and loss. Think about it - even if you’re a rich man or woman your life is a long series of losses. Cherished possessions will be lost or broken. Lovers will come and go. Relatives and pets you care for will die and leave you forever. You’ll loose jobs or loose interest in jobs and continue to go through the motions. In fact everything you collect you will eventually part ways with. Possessions are a poison and each one you collect is just more potential energy leading to emptiness and the pain of loss.
Hopefully the afterlife can provide some respite from this predicament, but I fear it will not. I’m optimistic about death and the afterlife, but based on what many people experience in life, it’s not unreasonable to assume the afterlife will be more of the same. Impotence at the hands of government on Earth and whatever dictatorial ghost you believe in after death.
