I rarely see advertisements these days. I block ads on my computer and phone. I live a peaceful life mostly devoid of spurious wants. When I do see advertisements - at the airport, a hotel, screeching at me from gas pumps I make an effort to remember the businesses or services being advertised and to never ever purchase their product or patronize their services. Why? I don’t like the pseudo mind control marketing companies are beaming at me. If I’m going to be forced to remember these invasions into my headspace I’m going to also remember that whatever it is was that shouted at me is one of the most awful things on the planet. Yes this means I can never have a coke or go to McDonalds. That’s no great loss.
If a product or service is good it doesn’t need to be advertised. Therefore whatever you need a google search will most likely result in a better option than the one being shouted at you.
So how do I find out about new things of interest and interesting things to buy? Sigh.. Don’t you already have enough things? Why do you need more? If I have a pressing need for a product of some sort I search it out rather (duckduckgo, google, ask for advice from friends and family or on reddit). When I need something I search it out and bring it to me. I’m not a walking want machine that only needs to be stimulated and filled with desires the world can fulfill for me (at a price).
I’m reminded of Bill Hick’s words from long ago: ‘If [you’re] in advertising or marketing… kill yourself’. This goes doubly for me. The people you’re infecting are worth so much more. And euphemism like ‘educating your audience’ (to products) is disgusting. Kill yourself so the rest of us may thrive.
